Meditation and Mindfulness Benefits

Dan Harris, who wrote “10% Happier” gives such a clear explanation of the benefits of meditation and how to practice mindfulness, that I wanted to share it with you here.  Even though many of us think that we don’t have time to practice, he asserts that even 5-10 minutes a day can make a big difference in your life.  I agree!

The important thing is to do it every day…I encourage those I teach to practice daily, even though they may not feel like it, or don’t think they have time, or don’t think they are “getting anywhere.”

That is not the point.  Practicing momentary awareness is about being awake and aware of what is actually going on in your life.  Now is the only moment when you can exercise choice in this life.  We can’t change the past, we can’t predict the future.  And if we are conscious in this moment, we can decide what we want to do with it.  Sometimes it is skillful to do nothing.  Sometimes we can choose to do something different than what we usually do.  The point is that you have the power to choose.

If we are conscious in this moment, we might be able to see past our old narratives and our emotional and mental reactivity to what is going on, without the judgements, interpretations and assumptions that cause us to behave impulsively and increase our suffering.

This moment is your life – what do you want to do with it?
